Laser Cavity Detection System

The DIAGNOdent system measures tooth decay through the use of precise laser light. As the incident laser light is flashed into tooth crevices, the computer can actually differentiate between healthy and decayed tissue based upon the color of light reflected back. At the specific wavelength that the DIAGNOdent laser operates, clean healthy tooth structure exhibits little or no color, resulting in very low scale readings on the display.

However, decaying tooth structure will exhibit fluorescence, proportionate to the degree of decay, resulting in elevated scale readings on the display. Altered tooth substances and bacteria react when they are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, allowing for precise detection of cavities.

The DIAGNOdent is also equiped with an audio signal which allows the operator to hear changes in the scale values. This enables the focus to be on the patient, not solely on the device.
